On Farm Water Management Project

Our Goal

The development objective of the On Farm Water Management was to improve agricultural productivity in project areas by enhancing the efficiency of water used.

How We Deliver

The Project: Over 70% of Afghanistan’s population lives in rural areas and a major part of Afghanistan’s population is dependent on the agriculture sector (defined as annual crops, horticulture and livestock), which on average has accounted for nearly 40 percent of the total Gross Domestic Product during the past decade. Agricultural development is recognized by the Government as a major driver of economic growth and food security. However, most of the modern irrigation systems in Afghanistan were damaged during years of warfare and are in a state of disrepair as a result of long-term neglect.

The project provided farmers with improved, reliable, and equitable distribution of irrigation water to increase agricultural productivity. While primary and secondary conveyance infrastructure is being restored and rehabilitated under various other projects, physical improvements of tertiary irrigation facilities are equally important to complement effectiveness of the upstream developments. The latter is thus crucial for enhancing farm incomes and improving food security.

Project Results

  • Productivity of agricultural crops in project areas increased by 30%
  • Water User Organizations capable to adequately perform O&M tasks
  • Water use efficiency in project areas improved by 25%
  • MAIL staff in project areas capable to plan, implement and monitor OFWM programs
  • Effective and efficient project organization established.

The OFWMP was implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MAIL).
